Sekou Shabaka

Founder

This soon to be octogenarian (February ’39) is a native of Norfolk, Virginia who was educated in its public school system as well as at Norfolk University and Virginia State University. After 42 years of public service in the fields of mental health, social service, juvenile corrections, and adult corrections, a decision was made to use those experiences and skills to team with like minded person and bring self-help services to a population most frequently under valued, marginalized, underestimated and under served. The name of the organization, the Shrine of the Black Madonna Sanctuary, Inc., is historically accurate and provides a positive icon that many of those we wish to service may identify with. Those who volunteer to serve and those who join in membership are demonstrating faith in our ability to bring about meaningful and sustainable change in the community identified in our mission and in its citizens. Attractive and practical events and activities will serve as a powerful tool in meeting our goal. If you believe in our mission and goals, we welcome your engagement.
