Goochland Veterans Proudly Represent Virginia at the National Veterans Golden Age Games
Fauquier Baptist Church members and Goochland Military Veteran residents Michael and Yvette Thomas were honored to represent Goochland County and the Commonwealth of Virginia at the 40th Anniversary of the National Veterans Golden Age Games in Tampa, Florida.
The National Veterans Golden Age Games provide veterans age 55 and older with the opportunity to compete in a variety of athletic events while promoting healthy living, rehabilitation, fellowship, and friendly competition. Veterans from across the nation come together to demonstrate that age and service-connected disabilities do not define their abilities, determination, or competitive spirit.
Yvette competed in handcycling, bowling, boccia, and horseshoes, earning gold medals in both boccia and horseshoes. Michael competed in horseshoes, air rifle, and bowling, finishing just shy of the medals with an impressive fourth-place finish in horseshoes.
Both Michael and Yvette live with service-connected disabilities and are grateful for the opportunity to continue competing. Yvette is a veteran of the Iraq War, while Michael proudly served at Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo). Their participation reflects not only their commitment to healthy living but also the resilience and perseverance that continue long after military service.
Representing Goochland County and Virginia on the national stage was an unforgettable experience. Competing alongside fellow veterans from across the country inspired them through shared determination, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Athletes are grouped by age, gender, and disability classification, allowing each veteran to compete fairly while showcasing their individual abilities.
While bringing home medals is always rewarding, Michael and Yvette believe that simply having the opportunity to participate is a victory in itself. They are already looking forward to representing Goochland County and Virginia once again at the 2027 National Veterans Golden Age Games in Cleveland, Ohio, where they hope to continue proving that the golden years are still championship years.
